Caplinger’s Fresh Catch–serving fish straight off the hook

Everyday this week, I’ll be posting short reads on some of my favorite Indianapolis restaurants for seafood. This is post six of 10. If you get a chance to visit, or have a place you think I should check out, drop me a line—I’d love to hear from you!

YES!! There is a real fishmonger in a landlocked state. Like FOR REAL!! Caplinger’s Fresh Catch is a gemnot only does this family owned establishment get fresh seafood delivered on the daily that you can buy and take home to cook, but they also serve some of the best, no-nonsense seafood I’ve ever had. You can literally walk in, point at something in the case, and they will cook it for you (and if they do, make sure you get it with collard greens and hush puppies like in the photo above). It doesn’t get much fresher than this. 

The Food
A large percentage of what I cook at home comes from this fish market. Not only do they have the “regular” guys … halibut, salmon, shrimp … but they also carry alligator, oysters, escargot, lobster, octopus, among a number of other species. And, if there’s something special you want, all you have to do is ask and chances are they can order it in for you. Like the whole Long Island porgy that I’ve cooked not once, but twice and will do so again soon.

If you’re eating in, do as I do and order any fish grilled, or do as most everyone that has ever been to Caplinger’s and order a fish sandwich. You can order one off the menu, or you can pick anything from the cold case and they’ll make it into a sandwich … but chances are you’ll be good to go with one of the gazillion offering: crab melt, lobster roll, cod filet, shrimp po boy, THE LIST GOES ON!

Bottom line: Caplinger’s is a great place to eat, but it’s an even better place to shop for the seafood you’re going to make at home … maybe with one of the recipies I have posted here, on Seafood is The New Black ; ) But no matter why you visit, to eat in or to bring home, you cannot go wrong as this place has something for everyone (yes, they even have the token chicken sandwich for the nonbelievers).

Hey there. I’m Shauna—a West Coast transplant in the landlocked state of Indiana … when I moved here I missed the beaches, the mountains, the desert, the rivers … and it took me a while to find places nearby that paralleled my old stomping grounds. BUT. Now that I’ve lived here for over 15 years, I’ve had time to explore the region and you know what? It’s amazing. There’s so much to do—from skiing in northern Michigan to relaxing lakeside in southern Kentucky to rocking the nightlife in one of the many metropolitan areas. And I love it here. I really do. BUT. I do miss the sea … and the sand and the rush of the waves … the smell of seawater … even the sting of too much sun after a day spent lollygagging at the beach. And I miss the constant supply of seafood and shellfish and riverfish? About that … since I’ve moved to the Midwest I’ve noticed that a lot of people here don’t consider fish that come from the river seafood … I’m not sure I agree, but hence the new word I’ve created, “riverfish” … time will tell if Webster picks it up ; ) So my blog, Seafood is The New Black, is my way of bringing a little bit of sea life (or is it sealife?) to the Midwest. And over on Seafood in the Circle City, you can read up on my favorite Indianapolis restaurants that serve seafood, and serve it well. As you read along, you’ll find all kinds of information … some that you might find more useful than others—and some, you might just find amusing … or not. Either way, and if nothing else, I hope you leave my little space here on the world wide web a little refreshed and maybe even a little inspired to bring a little bit of the ocean home with you. (Yes, I did use the word “little” four times in one sentence … it’s OK … mermaids like to repeat themselves.) Cheers!
